- home run hitters, they
- think of big, burly men. At
- 5' 9" and 170 pounds, Mel
- Ott was hardly that. But
- for 22 seasons, he was one of the most
- feared sluggers in baseball and became the
- first National Leaguer to hit 500 home runs.

- Besides awesome power, the lefthanded
- hitter brought a unique batting style to the
- plate. With his feet planted wide apart he
- would approach a pitch by raising his right
- leg in the air, dropping it quickly, and lashing
- at the ball.

- It obviously worked because Mel was
- wearing a major league uniform by the
- time he was 17. As a member of the
